Ikea will replace its 310,000-square-foot store in Bolingbrook, Illinois, with a smaller-format location in nearby Naperville, marking a deliberate shift in how the retailer adapts to evolving consumer behavior. The Bolingbrook location will remain operational until late 2025, while the new Naperville store, scheduled to open in late 2027, will join a growing network of compact retail spaces designed for accessibility. This transition reflects a broader company strategy prioritizing convenience and urban reach over traditional superstore models.

The Naperville store will occupy only about 10% of the footprint of the Bolingbrook site, offering a more efficient shopping experience that includes the retailer’s Swedish food market and deli. Its proximity to expanding residential areas and a major shopping district ensures it will serve the existing customer base while cutting travel time. The location also aligns with Ikea’s push to position stores in high-demand areas where smaller formats can thrive.

This realignment is part of a $2.2 billion investment announced in 2023, aimed at modernizing Ikea’s U.S. operations to improve affordability, accessibility, and sustainability. Key components of the plan include introducing new store formats, enhancing digital tools, and upgrading fulfillment networks. The company has also launched plan-and-order points with pickup options, allowing customers to combine large-item purchases with online orders in a single visit, streamlining the shopping process.

Digital expansion remains a cornerstone of the strategy. Ikea has overhauled its website and mobile app, expanded self-service return options for both packages and bulky items, and integrated AI-driven training tools for employees. These upgrades are intended to cut operational costs, accelerate delivery times, and free staff to focus on in-store customer service rather than logistical tasks.

The closure of the Bolingbrook store does not signal a retreat from the Chicago area. The new Naperville location will be within a 30-minute drive of Ikea’s full-sized store in Schaumburg, ensuring continuity for loyal shoppers. The move shows a deliberate focus on meeting demand in both product sales and shopping convenience, with an emphasis on urban and suburban accessibility. By consolidating resources, Ikea aims to maintain its market position while adapting to how consumers increasingly prefer to shop.
